I defer to your off-leash dog ranting prowess. And I feel your pain.

We have a park near our house with a playground, soccer field & baseball diamond, with signs posted at all entrances stating dogs need to be on leash. Yet it has become a de facto dog park. In fact, I had an argument with an 11-year-old who told me it was a dog park when her dog was off-leash. Um, no, it just LOOKS that way. Grrr.

Hi Daniela,

Thanks for the comment. We continue to visit that playground since we live near by, and daily there are dogs running around the playground. Of course big in the news lately has been the issue of dogs around school in Vancouver. I don't think there are any easy answers, but a little common courtesy and common sense would be nice!

Hi Anthony,

I live here on False Creek and walk the kids to school everyday. And I think the situation is out of hand. What is sad is that today I talked to the ParksBoard and felt even more helpless than before I attempted contacting them.

In the restricted area you point out, there was, and again will be, a very confusing sign that allows dogs off leash in the winter months and on leash in the summer months. When I asked one of the dog owners why they do not comply with that sign, she kind of told me her dog does not distinguish May, from June or August. What more can one say.

I ended up in a screaming match with an older guy (gentleman is too much to say) who was encouraging his dog to attack a racoon by the water. He wanted his dog to teach that racoon who is boss. By the time I walked into the situation with my kids there were people who had come out of a near by restaurant to convince the man that this is not a good idea. One of them even mentioned that a racoon can seriously damage a dog. My concern: the dog has to be on a leash. It didn't matter that we called the SPCA, or the police. One of the poeple with an accent who got involved was even told by the owner to go back to his country. To this day I have never see this man with his dog on a leash.

The problem with dogs running around loose also makes the area dirty and there is dog doo-doo everywhere. So our early morning walks are like walking through doo-mine field.

I will not even get started on the playground since you gave an example of that already. Part of the problem is that some people
are not even familiar with their responsibilities.

Others are just plain intimidating and arrogant.

Sorry this ended so long, but wanted to tell you you are not alone and we could probably do something if we all banded together. I am trying to figure out ways to do that.

Well Anthony you certainly have vented. As a dog owner and lover of all animals I agree with you entirely. No dog should be off leash and unsupervised in any situation where there are children or for that matter anywhere. Unfortunately the woman with the 3 unleashed dogs considered them her children but did not really recognize that you could actually be unhappy with her little darlings. For her sake I hope you don't run into her again with her little darlings.
