After the world’s. Slowest. Drive-through. Service. we made it to the drive in last night.

The first movie was “Hairspray” (not bad, but not great)l. It started at 8:30pm and ran for two hours.

And Aidan thought it was great. “Look!” “Movie!” “Dancing!” “Singing!”

For the whole two hours. We cuddled him. We strapped him in his seat. We created a “bed” for him in the trunk with blankets and his pillow. The movie, and trucks, and people were just too distracting.

At 10:30pm, between the shows (the next one was “Rush Hour 3”, more or less forgettable) we tried in earnest to get him to sleep. In the end, Gwen crawled in the back with him, and eventually got him to sleep.

It was after 1pm when we got home (the third show was “Transformers”, but Gwen didn’t really want to see it, and I don’t think I would have stayed awake…) and the boy into his own bed.

And, wouldn’t you know it, for once he cooperated! It wasn’t until 8:45am that he woke up this morning.

Final verdict: not a raging success, but also not a disaster. Certainly better than the last time!

Tonight, for the first time since he’s been home after our vacation, Aidan let me put him to bed.

Since Gwen and Aidan arrived home last week, Aidan has been extremely cling. With Gwen.

In fact, all attempts by me to put him to bed were met (initially) with almost frantic screams: “No, Mommy! No, Mommy!!!” He would physically push me away and go into almost hysterical crying. He wouldn’t give me hugs, and for many days he wouldn’t even say “Goodnight” to me.

But it’s been slowly getting better, as we return to routine. Last night I got to read him a book, but Mommy had to read him a book afterwards, and then she put him to bed. But tonight, I did it all by myself! Changed into jammies, read the book (Down on The Farm by Merrily Kutner, illustrated by Will Hillenbrand), and put to bed without a single tear or cry for Mommy.

Maybe I’m forgiven.

And tomorrow we stir the pot by trying to go to the drive-in.

While watching the news tonight, a segment on stupid wire thieves in Delta:

Aren’t there easier ways to steal money? Can’t they go and find some old ladies to bilk?

Ah yes. Compassion
